The story of the 50th Hereditary Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, whom Ismailis respectfully and lovingly address as Mawlana Hazar Imam (Our Lord, the Present Living Imam), is divided into two parts. The first part covers his life from his birth on October 12, 1971, until February 4, 2025, when Mawlana Shah Karim, his father, passed away. You can read Part 1 HERE.
This section, Part 2, invites you to join us on a journey from February 4, 2025, to the celebration of his 55th birthday on October 12, 2026. Introduction: The Ismaili Imamat and the 50th Ismaili Imam
“There is always an Imam to guide the Jamat” — Mawlana Hazar Imam, Paris, France, July 12, 2025.

For many years, Barakah has celebrated the birthdays of Mawlana Shah Karim’s family members, including Prince Rahim, by sharing special posts highlighting key moments in their lives and their contributions to the Imamat. We update these annual birthday articles to include new events leading up to each birthday.
For the past 20 months, Mawlana Shah Rahim al Hussaini has been the Hazar Imam, the Living and Manifest Imam of the Ismailis. His reign has already brought new initiatives and life to our community, keeping us all informed and engaged. As he wished, he has travelled to several countries for AKDN-related projects and to grant Didar to his spiritual children. He has even suggested that he would like to meet members of the Jamat individually in later years.
During his visits to the Jamats, Mawlana Shah Rahim Hazar Imam has shown enormous insight in the advice he has given us. We are delighted that his Farmans, filled with spiritual guidance that nourishes our souls and guides us in our daily lives, are published within weeks of being delivered.

When recalling his father’s passing, Mawlana Hazar Imam reminded us that human existence is transitory. But then, in a reassuring voice, he said, “There is always an Imam to guide the Jamat.” This is a promise that the Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him and his progeny) gave to his community in a well-regarded tradition known as the Two Weighty Matters: “I am leaving amongst you two weighty things after me, the Qur’an and my Progeny (ahl al-bayt). Verily, if you hold fast to them both, you will never go astray. Both are tied with a long rope and cannot be separated till the Day of Judgement.”
It is also worth reflecting on the Qur’anic verse, “Allah did choose Adam and Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of Imran above all people — offspring, one of the other, and Allah knows and hears all things.” (Holy Qur’an, 3:33-34). Mawlana Hazar Imam, as were all the Imams before him, is the offspring of the family of Abraham and the family of Imran. He is the manifest Imam and the Imam-of-the-Time without whom the world would cease to exist. This is attested in a well-known tradition of the Prophet and emphasized in Ismaili Ginans (hymns).
The initial wave of sorrow at the loss of Mawlana Shah Karim gave way to wonder, joy, and contentment among all ages of the Jamat, especially the young members who have had the opportunity to have special mulaqats with Mawlana Hazar Imam.

We joyfully celebrated the sixty-seventh Salgirah of Mawlana Shah Karim, from December 13, 1957, to December 13, 2024, as a united Jamat. As we mark the second Salgirah of Mawlana Shah Rahim Hazar Imam, our 50th Imam, on October 12, 2026, we wish him a very happy Salgirah and extend our heartfelt prayers for his good health and long life. We thank Allah for blessing us with the Imamate, through which we have remained on Siratal Mustaqim (the straight path) for centuries. We look forward to many more years of his benevolent guidance and love, as demonstrated in all his visits and messages. As a Jamat, we must continue to strengthen our devotion and obedience to him, so we may advance further in both our material and spiritual lives.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations on the second auspicious Salgirah Mubarak of Mawlana Hazar Imam to Ismailis and their families worldwide. We pray for everyone’s material and spiritual well-being, happiness, and mushkil ahsan.

February 2025: In a gracious and thankful message, the 50th Ismaili Imam, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, describes the two weeks since the passing of his father as “fitting, simple and beautiful”
His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan was enthroned as the 50th Hereditary Imam of the Ismaili Muslims on February 11, 2025, after his father, His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan, passed away on February 4, 2025. He shared a heartfelt message on the official Ismaili community website, reproduced below.
“The past two weeks have been deeply emotional for the Ismaili community, and for all those around the world who had known my father or been touched by his work. I am awed by the outpourings of affection and respect for my father and the impact he made during his lifetime. His is indeed an immense legacy for us all to carry on.
“On behalf of my family and me, I would like to express our deepest gratitude and admiration for the outstanding way in which our community immediately and seamlessly arranged the events that took place in Lisbon and Aswan. Beyond the flawless execution of the events themselves, millions of people in over 70 countries were able to participate through video streaming, images, and narration on The Ismaili digital channels.
“Organising this involved a small number of our staff, and a huge number of volunteers working around the clock, with a clear unifying goal of holding a graceful series of events made widely accessible to the community wherever physically possible. This was done with sensitivity and care for all those participating.
“My uncle, siblings, our children, and I see and appreciate all those who were involved – not just the leaders who were dealing directly with my family and me, but every single person who contributed, wherever they are.
“Our tradition of volunteer service and its effectiveness is a source of enormous strength for our community, and I feel fortunate to be able to call on this for the benefit of my Jamat.
“Well done to all involved, and especially to the handful of senior leaders who worked day and night to orchestrate all of this, and who provided tremendous support to my family and stable leadership to the community at this critical and difficult time. Knowing that we can rely on each other at a time like this is a source of the greatest comfort and reassurance.
“My sincerest thanks again to all those involved in making the events of the last two weeks fitting, simple, and beautiful.”

May 9, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan writes to the Prime Minister for Pakistan-India Peace
(An extended reading)
It is worth noting that his father, the late Aga Khan IV, also played a role in mediating during previous Pakistan-India disputes. His efforts were well-regarded, and he was respected for his role in promoting dialogue and peaceful solutions during times of crisis. Prince Rahim’s offer to step into a similar role demonstrates his continued dedication to fostering peace and stability in the region — Daily Times, Pakistan, May 10, 2025

Pakistan’s daily, Dawn, in ongoing live update on the Pakistan-India conflict, said in its May 10, 2025, edition that Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, wrote to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the United Nations Secretary-General, offering his assistance in de-escalating the situation between Pakistan and India. The following is Dawn’s report:
Prince Rahim Aga Khan has written to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the United Nations chief, offering his assistance in de-escalation between Pakistan and India.
According to a letter — see image below — by Prince Rahim to PM Shehbaz, dated May 9 and seen by Dawn.com, the Aga Khan wrote: “Like many others around the world, I am extremely concerned about the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan since the 22nd April attack in [occupied] Kashmir.
“It is my hope and prayer that a peaceful resolution to this conflict [would] be rapidly achieved in order to limit loss of life and injury on both sides,” he added.
Stressing that the Ismaili Imamat was a “non-political institution with strong historical relations with India and Pakistan”, Prince Rahim said: “I am therefore writing to offer my assistance in any way which Your Excellency thinks could be helpful, including mediation, in order to end this dispute.”
He noted that he had also written to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, “offering my support in any way deemed appropriate — in creating the conditions to allow a lasting return to peace”.
And in related news, Pakistan’s Daily Times, under the heading “Prince Rahim Aga Khan proposes mediation to resolve Pakistan-India conflict,” wrote:
“Prince Rahim Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of the Ismaili community, has offered to mediate between Pakistan and India amid rising tensions between the two nations. According to reports, Prince Rahim expressed concern over the escalating situation and wrote letters to the Prime Ministers of both Pakistan and India, proposing his assistance as a neutral mediator. He emphasized that the ongoing tension between the countries poses a significant threat to the region.
“The spiritual leader highlighted the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict, hoping that further loss of life could be avoided. In his letters, Prince Rahim Aga Khan urged both governments to consider dialogue and mediation in order to prevent the situation from worsening. His offer for mediation comes at a time when both countries are on edge, and the international community has been closely watching the developments.
“In addition to writing to the leaders of Pakistan and India, Prince Rahim Aga Khan also reached out to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. He requested that the UN play an active role in facilitating peace talks and helping resolve the conflict. This move reflects his longstanding commitment to peace and diplomacy in global affairs.
“It is worth noting that his father, the late Aga Khan IV, also played a role in mediating during previous Pakistan-India disputes. His efforts were well-regarded, and he was respected for his role in promoting dialogue and peaceful solutions during times of crisis. Prince Rahim’s offer to step into a similar role demonstrates his continued dedication to fostering peace and stability in the region.
“As tensions between Pakistan and India continue to rise, international leaders and peace advocates are calling for calm and a return to diplomatic discussions. Prince Rahim Aga Khan’s mediation offer could play a crucial role in preventing further escalation and finding a peaceful path forward for both countries.”

In statement read by AKU’s President Sulaiman Shahabuddin, Mawlana Hazar Imam said,”
“You meet at a time when Pakistan has once again endured devastating floods, exposing the vulnerabilities of mountain communities, downstream cities, and rural communities. Such events remind us that extreme weather may be the trigger, but it is human choices that determine the magnitude of loss. Encroachment on waterways, weak land-use planning, inadequate building standards, use of inappropriate construction materials, and chronic under-investment in essential infrastructure have magnified the risks.
“Climate change is one of the greatest threat multipliers of our era. Its impacts intensify disease, malnutrition, displacement, learning loss, and poverty. These burdens fall disproportionately upon women, children, older adults, and marginalized communities. Addressing them is not optional; it is imperative for equity, stability, and sustainable development….The issues before us are immense. But through scientific discourse, research and partnership, we can shape a future in which our built environment strengthens resilience and reduces vulnerability. May this symposium be a step toward that future.” (Please read the Aga Khan’s complete statement HERE).

A strongly held belief in the power of education to change lives and societies has been a defining thread across the history of the Ismaili Imamat — from the founding of Al-Azhar in the tenth century, to the establishment of Aligarh Muslim University, the Aga Khan University, and the University of Central Asia in the twentieth century, and the network of more than 200 Aga Khan Schools educating young people across diverse societies today — His Highness the Aga Khan
In a special video message, Mawlana Hazar Imam, congratulated the graduating class across the University’s campuses in Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, the United Kingdom, Afghanistan and Pakistan. He also spoke of the power and potential of education to respond to global challenges and uplift humanity.
“Never before have we known so much about nature and humanity,” he said. “Never before have the tools of scholarship and science been so powerful — from gene editing to artificial intelligence, and from climate science to data-driven innovation. This moment therefore places upon the Aga Khan University and its graduates both an extraordinary responsibility and an extraordinary opportunity: to create, to disseminate, and to apply knowledge in ways that improve the quality of human life.” (Read Mawlana Hazar Imam’s full speech HERE)

January 26, 2026: His Highness the Aga Khan approves construction of Ismaili Centre in Paris

In a Talika Mubarak read in Jamatkhanas in France and its jurisdictions, Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, has informed his community that he has approved the development of a new Ismaili Centre in Paris, as his father, Mawlana Shah Karim, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, wished. He has further authorized the design and construction of the Centre in Paris to proceed.
Hazar Imam reflected on the momentous occasion and outlined his aspiration for the Centre: “This building, which will be a symbol of the permanent presence of the Jamat in France, when completed, will be a significant addition to the architectural and cultural landscape of Paris…It is my hope that in addition to providing space for the Jamat’s congregational practices, this Centre will become a social and cultural centre for the Jamat of the jurisdiction, its extended families and its neighbours.”
Plans for the project date back to 2008 when Mawlana Shah Karim, during his Golden Jubilee, expressed a wish to establish an Ismaili Centre in Paris. A site was later identified, and in recent years work has accelerated to propose plans and designs for the building. The construction phase is expected to reach completion in mid-2028.

His Highness the Aga Khan also emphasized the impact of their achievement, noting that the University and its alumni carry “both an extraordinary responsibility and an extraordinary opportunity: to create, to disseminate, and to apply knowledge in ways that improve the quality of human life.”

While Devin and Cole did not win a medal — finishing 10th — in the 2026 Olympics, his participation was a remarkable display of courage, despite shoulder injuries, for the second time this season.
