December 6, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Activations
The official Abu Dhabi Media Office has reported on December 6, 2025 that His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, attended activations (click to watch video) at the 17th Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, held at Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The Crown Prince had meetings with several officials participating in the event. Also, he met with several of Abu Dhabi’s guests, including Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, who was accompanied by his younger brother, Prince Aly Muhammad.

Activation events vary from country to country and offer a range of immersive experiences for racing fans leading up to the race.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday, December 7, is the last Formula 1 race of the year. The race is crucial as it will determine the 2025 Formula 1 Champion based on the points each of the current top three contenders has accumulated, engaging fans and followers worldwide to see the final outcome. The BBC notes that the F1 title decider could hardly be better set up as the three title contenders qualified together at the front of the grid for Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
A few weeks earlier, on November 18, Prince Aly Muhammad attended the 19th edition of the Al Burda Award Ceremony at Louvre Abu Dhabi.

December 3, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan begins his 3-day visit to Portugal
Earlier on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, to begin a three-day visit to meet with the Ismaili communities of Portugal and Spain. He was received by Ambassador Francisco Vaz Patto, Head of State Protocol; Prof. Francisco Proença Garcia, Chairman of the Portuguese Delegation to the Seat Agreement Joint Committee; Yasmin Bhudarally, President of the Ismaili Council for Portugal; and Nazim Ahmad, Diplomatic Representative of the Ismaili Imamat to Portugal. A delegation of Ismaili leaders was also present to welcome Mawlana Hazar Imam on behalf of the Jamats of Portugal and Spain.

November 28, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan’s Message to AKU Symposium in Karachi on Climate Change
As Pakistan’s top architects, urban planners and public health experts convened on November 28, 2025, in Karachi, Pakistan, to develop strategies for building climate-resilient cities and communities in response to record temperatures and extreme flooding, Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, sent a statement to delegates, which was read in the conference’s opening session. The event is being hosted by Aga Khan University’s Institute for Global Health and Development in partnership with the Sustainable Development Solutions Network Pakistan. The conference’s focus on redesigning homes, neighbourhoods and public systems aims to shape future climate resilience efforts across Pakistan.
In statement, read by AKU’s President Sulaiman Shahabuddin, Mawlana Hazar Imam said”
“You meet at a time when Pakistan has once again endured devastating floods, exposing the vulnerabilities of mountain communities, downstream cities, and rural communities. Such events remind us that extreme weather may be the trigger, but it is human choices that determine the magnitude of loss. Encroachment on waterways, weak land-use planning, inadequate building standards, use of inappropriate construction materials, and chronic under-investment in essential infrastructure have magnified the risks.
“Climate change is one of the greatest threat multipliers of our era. Its impacts intensify disease, malnutrition, displacement, learning loss, and poverty. These burdens fall disproportionately upon women, children, older adults, and marginalized communities. Addressing them is not optional; it is imperative for equity, stability, and sustainable development….The issues before us are immense. But through scientific discourse, research and partnership, we can shape a future in which our built environment strengthens resilience and reduces vulnerability. November 25, 2025: Message from his highness the aga khan to The 2025 Global Pluralism Award ceremony
In a special video message, Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, shared his heartfelt wishes for the Global Pluralism Award Ceremony 2025. He acknowledged the work of the Award, which he said enables us to look beyond division and be part of constructive change.
Attended by his sister, Princess Zahra, three groundbreaking initiatives from Israel and Palestine, Southern Africa, and Colombia were honoured with the 2025 Global Pluralism Award, with seven other projects receiving honourable mentions.
The ceremony was broadcast live from the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat Building in Ottawa, with extended coverage available in the YouTube video below — it’s more than 90 minutes long.
Mawlana Hazar Imam spoke about the vital importance of pluralism, encouraged us to learn from the diversity we encounter each day, and consider what positive changes we can make in our own societies.
“As we congratulate and learn more about these exceptional laureates tonight,” he said, “I invite you to think about what meaningful action you can implement in your own life. Each of our choices matters in the face of our global challenges.”

November 22, 2025: Members of His Highness the Aga Khan’s family honour winners of the 2025 Aga Khan Music Awards

The world’s music industry came together to celebrate eleven groundbreaking artists being honoured as this year’s winners of the Aga Khan Music Awards in a ceremony on November 23, 2025, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre, London. The laureates, selected by an independent seven-member jury from a pool of over 400 nominees, share a prize fund of $500,000 and gain access to professional opportunities such as commissions, recordings, management contracts, and support for educational and preservation initiatives.
The Awards ceremony, taking place in the United Kingdom for the first time, underscored the significance of the Aga Khan Music Awards, founded in 2018 by Mawlana Shah Karim, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, and Prince Amyn. The awards recognize individuals and groups who preserve and innovate Islamic musical heritage, fostering spiritual insight and cultural resilience. In attendance were special guests His Excellency Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, UAE’s Minister of Culture; and Sheikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, President of Bahrain’s authority for culture and antiquities. Prince Amyn Aga Khan was also present, alongside Prince Hussain, Princess Fareen, Prince Aly Muhammad and leaders of the Ismaili community and the Aga Khan Development Network.
In welcoming guests to the ceremony, Fairouz Nishanova, Director of the Aga Khan Music Programme, said, “Tonight we honour the artistry and achievements in recognising an extraordinary constellation of winners, performing in seamless harmony.” She also explained the value of music in our everyday lives: “It is the pulse beneath our stories, the memory of what we’ve built, and the proof of what we have survived,” she said. “Music has outlasted empires, revolutions, and wars. It never fights with force — it simply waits. And it always returns.
Prince Aly Muhammad delivered a keynote address in which he spoke of the uniting, bridge-building quality of music. In a profoundly inspirational address, he said:
“The musicians that we honour tonight embody both mastery and generosity. Their artistry is not only technical: it is human, and through their work they can transmit knowledge, values, and stories that have travelled through generations. In doing so, they remind us that tradition is not a relic of the past, but a living current that flows through the present. The impact of these artists tonight is not measured only by applause, or recordings, but by the lives that they touch. Whether that’s a student, inspired, who finds confidence in learning an instrument, or someone forced away from their home who feels reconnected with their community when they hear a familiar melody. These are the moments when music moves from the stage and into the world. And this is why the Aga Khan Music Awards is not simply a ceremony of recognition, it is a statement of belief; that culture is a foundation of development, and that creativity is a form of service. November 21, 2025: Prince Amyn Aga Khan confers Patron’s Award at the 2025 Aga Khan Music Awards in London’s Southbank Centre
Following two sold-out concerts on November 20, 2025, at the Ismaili Center London, by Triveni Quartet in honour of the famed tabla player Zakir Hussain, the 2025 Aga Khan Music Awards opened its evening at the Royal Festival Hall in London’s renowned Southbank Centre on November 21 with Prince Amyn Aga Khan, uncle of His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, conferring the distinguished Patron’s Award upon the Warsi Brothers and Naseeruddin Saami — two of South Asia’s most remarkable musical acts.
Both the Warsi and Saami musical lineages trace their heritage to Amir Khusrau, the esteemed 13th-century Sufi poet, musician and visionary polymath who profoundly shaped the cultural history of South Asia. Credited with creating the qawwali and khyal traditions, Amir Khusrau remains an enduring symbol of cultural pluralism.

In his remarks, Prince Amyn emphasized the importance of the Patron’s Award, which honours laureates who exemplify humanitarianism and pluralism, encouraging attendees to recognize their vital contributions. “It is especially meaningful for me,” he said, “to bestow the Patron’s Award on these distinguished artists, who have so vigorously shared Amir Khusrau’s legacy of humanitarianism and pluralism with audiences in both South Asia and around the world.”

The guests were entertained by performances from the Aga Khan Master Musicians, who were joined by the Patron’s Award laureates. Accompanying Prince Amyn were Prince Hussain and his wife, Princess Fareen, Prince Aly Muhammad, and Sarah Boyden, the daughter of Princess Zahra Aga Khan.
The AKMA Patron’s Award was last conferred in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2019 to Mohammed Reza Shajarian in recognition of his lasting contribution to musical heritage within Iran and beyond its borders. His daughter, Mohjan, accepted the Patron’s Award on his behalf from Mawlana Shah Karim, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV.

November 20, 2025: Members of His Highness the Aga Khan’s family attend Aga Khan Music Awards inaugural concerts leading to the 2025 Awards ceremony
In two inaugural concerts held at the Ismaili Centre, London, on November 20, 2025, as part of the 2025 Aga Khan Music Awards, the Triveni Quartet — comprising Fazal Qureshi on tabla, Kala Ramnath on violin, Jayanthi Kumaresh on saraswati veena, and Anantha Krishnan on mridangam — presented a musical conversation deeply rooted in classical tradition yet thrillingly spontaneous. The concerts, which were live-streamed worldwide, were a tribute to the late Zakir Hussain, widely regarded as the greatest tabla player of his generation. He was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by Prince Amyn Aga Khan, younger brother of His Late Highness Aga Khan IV and uncle of His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, at the Aga Khan Music Awards in Muscat in 2022.

The Ismaili Centre concerts were attended in the afternoon by Prince Amyn, Prince Aly Muhammad and his sister Princess Theresa Zu Leiningen, with Prince Hussain and Princess Fareen joining the evening performance. In attendance were Ustad Zakir’s family, delegates from the culture sector, music enthusiasts, as well as leaders of the Ismaili community, the Aga Khan Music Awards and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.
The Aga Khan Music Awards have partnered with the EFG London Jazz Festival and Southbank Centre in 2025 to bring an extraordinary programme of concerts, collaborations, and award celebrations to the UK.

November 18, 2025: Prince Aly Muhammad Aga Khan at the 19th Al Burda Award
Prince Aly Muhammad Aga Khan, younger brother of Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, attended the 19th edition of the Al Burda Award Ceremony on November 18, 2025, at Louvre Abu Dhabi.
Held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, the program featured an exceptional artistic performance titled “Beauty in Unity”. Performers from the UAE, Uzbekistan, Kuwait, Japan, Egypt, Guinea, Turkey, Iran, and France came together to celebrate the beauty that emerges from diversity and complementarity, reflecting the human values of harmony, unity, and inclusivity.
The 18th edition of the Al Burda Award, held in December 2024, was attended by Mawlana Hazar Imam, then Prince Rahim. In June 2025, the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto launched a special exhibition, As the Sun Appears from Beyond: Twenty Years of the Al Burda Award, celebrating the award’s two decades. The opening was attended by Prince Aly Muhammad representing Mawlana Hazar Imam. The exhibition is on view to visitors until February 15, 2026.
Along with the cultural performances, the 19th Al Burda Award honoured winners across all categories, from calligraphy and ornamentation to poetry, revealing the creative spirit that shapes the landscape of art and culture in the UAE.

November 4, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan to preside over the inauguration of the Ismaili Center in Houston ON November 6
On Thursday, November 6, 2025, the Ismaili Center in Houston will join a global network of six other landmark Ismaili Centers located in Dubai, Dushanbe, Lisbon, London, Toronto, and Vancouver when it is inaugurated. This historic event will be graced by the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, the 50th Hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. He succeeded to the Hereditary Throne of Imamat by the will of his father, Mawlana Shah Karim, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, who had commissioned all seven Ismaili Centres during his lifetime, and presided over the inauguration of each of the six buildings that were completed between 1985 and 2014.
Members of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s family will join him at the inauguration ceremony of the Ismaili Center, Houston. The historic event will be streamed live on The Ismaili TV. Coverage will begin at 10:15 AM local time.

The Ismaili, the official website of the Ismaili community, has announced that Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, at the invitation of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will undertake an official visit to the country from December 1-4, 2025. This visit is a unique opportunity for the Jamat under the jurisdiction of the Ismaili Council for Portugal to play a significant role and engage with our beloved Imam.
To focus his attention on the Ismaili community (Jamat) under the jurisdiction of the Ismaili Council for Portugal, Hazar Imam does not wish members of the Jamat from other parts of the world to travel to Portugal during his visit. A Talika (written holy message) regarding the visit was read out in Jamatkhanas around the world on Friday, October 31, 2025.
Barakah will dedicate a special page to the Portugal visit as we did for his recent visits to France (July 10-13), Kenya (August 25-27), Uganda (September 10-12), Kyrgyzstan (September 14-16), and his forthcoming visit to the USA (November 5 to 10), during which he will inaugurate the Ismaili Center Houston.

October 28, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan meets French President ahead of Paris Peace Forum, and AKDN pledges Euro 10 million towards new Endowment Fund
Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, was received on October 28, 2025, in Paris by President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace, by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot at the Quai d’Orsay and by Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo at l’Hotel de Ville ahead of the 8th edition of the Paris Peace Forum which is being held over two days, October 29-30, 2025. The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is one of the Forum’s founding members and a strategic partner for many years. In its formative years, Mawlana Shah Karim, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV (d. February 4, 2025), participated in the annual sessions, and, more recently, that role was seamlessly continued by his son, Prince Rahim, who attended the Forum on behalf of his late father. This is Prince Rahim’s first attendance at the annual Forum as the 50th Imam of the Ismaili Muslims.
Mawlana Hazar Imam’s discussion with French leaders provided an opportunity to build on meetings held in July 2025, during which he signed an agreement with the government of France to work together on a range of projects in education, culture, sustainable development and international cooperation.
Also, on October 28, the Paris Peace Forum announced the launch of an Endowment Fund, with the first pledge of €10 million from the Aga Khan Development Network. The Endowment Fund’s goal is to establish a financial reserve that will generate interest to provide reliable year-on-year funding in addition to existing donations. The Paris Peace Forum has invited other partners and philanthropic actors to contribute to the Endowment Fund and help build a permanent engine to reinvent diplomacy in a changing world.
The Press Release cites Mawlana Hazar Imam’s support for institutions such as the Paris Peace Forum. He said: “The challenges of our century require institutions that can sustain long-term, courageous work across borders and sectors. The Paris Peace Forum has shown it can convene diverse actors and catalyze solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems. With this pledge, the Aga Khan Development Network is proud to support the Forum’s enduring capacity to innovate for peace and equity.”
Justin Vaïsse, Founder and Director General of the Paris Peace Forum, responded: “We are deeply honored by this extraordinary commitment from the Aga Khan Development Network. It is a vote of confidence in the Forum’s mission and a crucial step in securing our independence, stability and impact for the decades ahead. October 19, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan meets the Muslim Council of Elders
The Muslim Council of Elders and Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, held a meeting on Sunday, October 19, 2025, in Abu Dhabi to enhance joint cooperation in promoting interfaith and intercultural dialogue, empowering youth, fostering moderation, and raising awareness on the ethical use of artificial intelligence to serve humanity. Hazar Imam was accompanied by his younger brother, Prince Aly Muhammad. His delegation also included Shafik Sachedina and Aly Mawji.
With offices in Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan and Kazakhstan, the Muslim Council of Elders was founded in Abu Dhabi on July 19, 2014. Composed of eminent scholars and dignitaries from the Muslim Ummah, renowned for their wisdom, moderation, justice, and independence, the Council’s mission is to foster peace within Muslim and non-Muslim communities alike and to advance the principles of dialogue, tolerance, and human coexistence. It is chaired by His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, whom Mawlana Hazar Imam met on September 30, 2025, during his visit to Cairo (also see post on X below, which was posted by the Muslim Council of Elders).
During the meeting in Abu Dhabi, His Excellency Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, the Secretary General of the Higher Committee on Human Fraternity and the Muslim Council of Elders, and the former legislative and legal advisor to the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, emphasised the depth of relations between the organization and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), praising the Network’s distinguished role in supporting education, culture, and sustainable development across the world. He also noted that both organisations share a common belief in the values of peace, tolerance, coexistence, and service to all people regardless of faith, race, or culture—guided by a shared vision of a more just and united world.
Hazar Imam expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the Muslim Council of Elders under the chairmanship of His Eminence Professor Dr Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, in spreading the values of dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence, as well as promoting unity within the Muslim world and addressing contemporary challenges. He also conveyed his deep appreciation for his recent meeting with the Grand Imam, describing it as an important step toward greater collaboration and mutual understanding.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties agreed to continue dialogue and joint coordination, and to work together on developing practical initiatives that promote interfaith and intercultural understanding, support sustainable development efforts, and build more peaceful and tolerant societies. Both parties also highlighted the importance of engaging youth in peacebuilding and raising awareness about the ethical use of artificial intelligence—driven by their shared conviction that universal human values can strengthen global partnerships, build bridges between East and West, and advance a culture of coexistence and human fraternity.

October 12, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan uniquely celebrates his birthday by running the Chicago Marathon
On Sunday, October 12, 2025, Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, celebrated his 54th birthday and the first Salgirah as the 50th Ismaili Imam in a unique way by running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. His participation in this global event, alongside more than 53,000 runners from the USA and over 100 countries worldwide, shows his commitment to health and fitness and is a source of inspiration, motivating us all to strive for our best. This continuity of encouragement from the Imams—from Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah, the 48th Imam, to Mawlana Shah Karim, the 49th Imam, and now to Mawlana Hazar Imam —tells us of the importance of physical activity in our lives. Like his predecessors, Mawlana Hazar Imam has urged his community to stay active and engage in physical activity. He said during his recent visit to Kenya (August 10-12, 2025):
“Make some time to move every day and play sports when you can. Whatever your age, and however busy you are, everyone can make an effort to move more. This will be good for your physical and your mental health.”
The Aga Khan said that he was delighted to see members of the Jamat participating in the Chicago marathon and asked that his warm congratulations be conveyed to them, emphasizing his deep appreciation for the support he received from the many members of his community in the crowd. Many were heard wishing him a happy birthday, and in one instance, he turned around and shook hands with the well-wishers before resuming his run. Earlier, we had prepared a special post of his participation in the 2024 Berlin Marathon, which with the Chicago, Tokyo, Boston, London, New York City and Sydney are the top marathon races in the world.

October 3, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan to visit the USA for the inauguration of the Ismaili Center Houston and to give Didar to his Ismaili followers
In a Talika Mubarak (holy written message) read in Jamatkhanas worldwide, Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, has informed his Ismaili community (Jamat) that he will undertake an official visit to the USA from November 5-10, 2025. This visit holds historical significance as he will inaugurate the Ismaili Center in Houston, marking a significant chapter in the history of the USA community. In conjunction with this visit, Mawlana Hazar Imam will meet with the Jamats of the Southwestern and Central United States. This will be his first visit to the USA since becoming the 50th Ismaili Imam on February 4, 2025, and the fourth to his spiritual children following his recent visits to France, Kenya and Uganda. Hazar Imam has expressed his intention to meet with his Jamat in other regions of the United States in the near future. He has specifically asked Ismailis from different parts of the USA or other countries not to travel to these regions during his visit, as he wishes to focus his attention on the Jamat of the Southwestern and Central United States. The Imam has previously expressed his desire and intention to travel extensively and meet with as many Jamats around the world as possible in person.

October 1, 2025: Prince Hussain Aga Khan mourns loss of Dr. Jane Goodall
Prince Hussain Aga Khan, younger brother of Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, and founder of Focused on Nature (FON), has paid a heartfelt tribute on his Instagram account to Dr. Jane Goodall, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace. She passed away from natural causes on October 1, 2025, at the age of 91.
In 1960, when Jane Goodall was only 26, she, equipped with little more than a notebook, binoculars, and her fascination with wildlife, travelled from England to Tanzania (then Tanganyika) and ventured into the little-known world of wild chimpanzees, humankind’s closest living relatives. Later in her life, while continuing to speak about the threats facing chimpanzees, she worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the threats to wildlife, promote conservation, and inspire a more harmonious and sustainable relationship between people, animals, and the natural world, as well as address environmental crises. She urged each of us to take immediate action on behalf of all living things and the planet we share, stressing the shared responsibility we all have for the situation.

September 30, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan is welcomed by Egypt’s President Sisi, and MEETS aL-aZHAR’S gRAND iMAM

Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, the 50th Hereditary Imam of the Ismaili Muslims met with His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. The meeting focused on current and future collaboration in Egypt, exploring ways to strengthen partnerships that benefit local communities and advance development. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Luis Monreal, General Manager of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, also attended the meeting.
The spokesman for the Presidency, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, said President El-Sisi commenced the meeting by congratulating His Highness on assuming his post earlier this year. The President lauded the contributions of his late father, His Late Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan, in leading the activities of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and its effective role in fostering development globally, particularly in the social, economic, and environmental sectors, in addition to its efforts in preserving Islamic cultural heritage.
President El-Sisi expressed his appreciation for the historic role the Aga Khan Development Network has played in Egypt over the decades. The President noted that this developmental partnership has contributed to supporting the state’s efforts to achieve sustainable development and improve the standard of living and services in a number of regions. This is in addition to its contribution to projects dedicated to preserving Egypt’s historic Islamic heritage.
The President highlighted the most significant national initiatives being implemented by the state within the framework of Egypt Vision 2030, which aims to achieve comprehensive development and improve basic services.
The meeting also addressed ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and upgrade several Egyptian neighbourhoods and restore their historical landmarks in a manner commensurate with their archaeological significance. The two sides also discussed prospects for future cooperation in these areas.
For his part, Mawlana Hazar Imam expressed his profound appreciation to the President and pride in his first official visit to the country. He confirmed the AKDN’s keenness on expanding its efforts to support the state’s drive to achieve comprehensive development, primarily in the sectors of education, agriculture, and enhancing climate change adaptation, particularly in Upper Egypt. He also highlighted the importance of leveraging the network’s experience in Cairo concerning urban and environmental revitalization for application in different contexts, including Aswan. His Highness also commended the tangible progress Egypt has achieved in human development programs, confirming that investing in people represents a fundamental pillar for realizing prosperity and sustainable growth.
Following his meeting with the President, Hazar Imam paid a courtesy call on the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, His Eminence Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed El-Tayeb. In welcoming Hazar Imam, the Grand Imam noted the historical ties and shared values that link Al-Azhar and the Ismaili Imamat. Their discussions explored opportunities for future dialogue between Al-Azhar and AKDN’s educational and cultural institutions.
The two leaders also explored ways institutions can collaborate with compassion and knowledge to promote peace and understanding amid crises affecting the Ummah and wider society.

Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, arrived in Bishkek on Sunday afternoon, September 14, 2025, accompanied by his younger brother, Prince Aly Muhammad, in preparation for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (AKAA) prize-giving ceremony, which is scheduled for Monday, September 15, 2025. In the evening, Mawlana Hazar Imam hosted a welcome dinner for international guests attending the award ceremony events. Joining him were his younger brothers, Prince Aly Muhammad and Prince Hussain, with his wife, Princess Fareen.
Established through an announcement during his visit to Pakistan in 1976 by the 49th Hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, Mawlana Shah Karim, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, the AKAA is presented every three years to projects that set new benchmarks in architecture, urban planning, historic preservation, and landscape design. The first Award Ceremony took place in Lahore, Pakistan, in October 1980.

September 7, 2025: Prince Aly Muhammad Aga Khan attends reopening of cherished Chapel in Portugal destroyed by wildfire
The restoration is not only of great importance to the local community and those who worship here, but also symbolises the solidarity between the Ismaili Imamat and the Catholic Church, and our respective institutions — Prince Aly Muhammad Aga Khan
The historic Chapel of Our Lady of Affliction in Branzelo, built in 1884, has been rebuilt from ashes and returned to the community in a remarkable display of resilience and unity, just one year after the September 2024 wildfires ravaged the Branzelo region of Gondomar in northern Portugal. The chapel, a place of worship and the heart of community gatherings, wedding celebrations, and moments of reflection, has been a beacon of hope for residents of Branzelo and the surrounding area. In the wake of tragedy, an unexpected partnership was formed, leading to a swift and inspiring restoration.
The Ismaili Imamat, in a gesture of solidarity and shared humanity, offered to help rebuild the chapel. Working hand in hand with the local Catholic community, they restored the cherished place of worship, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to the community and its cultural heritage.
The chapel was reopened at an event on September 7, 2025, attended by Prince Aly Muhammad Aga Khan, younger brother of His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, the Mayor of Gondomar, representatives of the Portuguese Government, Senior figures of the Catholic Church, and leaders of the Aga Khan Development Network in Portugal.

Rebuilt, it now features enhanced accessibility and modern fire prevention systems, including discreetly integrated sprinklers, ensuring safety for worshippers. These measures, while preserving the building’s historic character, provide a sense of security and peace of mind for all who visit the chapel.
Dating back to 1884, the chapel required a complete overhaul. The restoration team, with specialist technical expertise provided by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), meticulously reconstructed its roof, floors, and interior elements while staying true to its historical design. They utilized traditional materials and artisanal techniques, including a new 70cm-thick schist wall identical to the original, as well as ceramic tiles that reflect the region’s unique style. This project is part of AKTC’s broader cultural development work worldwide, demonstrating how revitalising heritage can strengthen communities and preserve cultural identity.
“The restoration is not only of great importance to the local community and those who worship here, but also symbolises the solidarity between the Ismaili Imamat and the Catholic Church, and our respective institutions,” said Prince Aly Muhammad.

Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, has announced in a Talika (written holy message) that was read out on Friday, July 25, 2025, in Jamatkhanas across Canada that at the invitation of the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, he will undertake an official visit to Uganda in September in conjunction with which he will meet with the members of the Ismaili community (Jamat) of Uganda. In a brief announcement dated July 26, the Ismaili, the official website of the Ismaili community, confirmed the visit for September 10-12, 2025.

In a special video message, Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, sent his good wishes for the success of the Global Encounters Festival 2025, which was launched in Dubai on Sunday, May 20, 2025, and shown live around the world on Ismaili TV.
Prince Aly Muhammad and Prince Amyn, respectively Mawlana Hazar Imam’s younger brother and uncle, were present for the opening ceremony, during which Ismaili artists and athletes paraded through the stage to the applause of the vast crowd in the concert hall. Simultaneously, their colleagues showcased the country’s rich artistic and natural heritage through displays and performances on stage, accompanied by well-researched narratives that described the country’s artistic, literary, and intellectual traditions.

Hazar Imam expressed his thanks to the government of the United Arab Emirates for welcoming the Jamat to the city of Dubai, and for its long-standing partnership with the Ismaili Imamat.
He conveyed his gratitude to all participants and their families, expressed his appreciation for the thousands of volunteers, and extended his special thoughts to those who were unable to attend in person. Hazar Imam also spoke of the ethics of our faith, which has kept the Jamat united for centuries. “Let us cherish this unity,” he said, “which has brought us so far and seen us through every challenge with courage and conviction.”

“Bismi’l-lahi’r-rahmani’r-rahim. I would like to begin by expressing my heartfelt thanks to His Highness Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, and to His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council and President of the UAE National Olympic Committee; to the city of Dubai; and to the government of the United Arab Emirates for the warm welcome they have extended to our Jamat.
“That His Highness Sheikh Nahayan and His Highness Sheikh Mansoor were also part of our celebrations during the Jubilee Games in 2016 highlights the continuity of our relationship and friendship with the UAE. We greatly appreciate this partnership, which is based on shared values and objectives.
“I truly wish I could be there to enjoy the Festival with you all in person, and I am grateful to my uncle, Prince Amyn, and to my brother, Prince Aly Muhammad, for being present on my behalf at the Opening Ceremony, and to my brother, Prince Hussain, who will join you later this week. I am conscious that mine is not the only absence from the Festival. I want to say that we are thinking very much of all of you who can not be here, for whatever reason, and who Insha’Allah, are joining us remotely with your families and Jamats, wherever possible. Of course, I want every gathering of our Jamat to be as inclusive as possible.
“Being with each other in person is fundamental to the health of our community. Even if sometimes difficult or costly, events like this give us a space to celebrate our diversity, to share our different experiences, and to make new connections and friends. But Global Encounters is more than just a gathering, it is also an amazing showcase of talent. This year promises to be another incredible spectacle — we are going to get a chance to see some of the greatest artists and athletes in our community. As the lineup shows, we can be deeply proud of the talent within our Jamat. We are good at celebrating our business, government, and thought leaders, but perhaps we are not always as quick to celebrate our athletes and artists, even though we have plenty of bright stars.
“Think of Rafiq Bhatia, recently Oscar-nominated for his film score work, or mountaineers like Sirbaz Khan and Samina Baig, both of whom have achieved world firsts in their field. It is only right that we celebrate these people and their accomplishments. To fulfil our potential as creatives or athletes is to realise a blessing. Sport and the arts are not only beautiful, they have a unique power to build bridges. Strangers who might not speak each other’s language can still come together to enjoy the same game of cricket or football and feel exactly the same passions. The poetry of great basketball, or volleyball, or wrestling is identical, whatever land you are from. And people who have different perspectives on almost everything can still fall under the same spell when they hear great music or see a beautiful piece of art. This is why many people have called art “the universal language.” And this is what Nelson Mandela meant when he said that sport “has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.”
“So, as you compete, do so with ambition, with integrity, humility and compassion, but most importantly, do so in the knowledge that you are sisters and brothers — members of One Jamat that has remained united over centuries. Let us cherish this unity, which has brought us so far and seen us through every challenge with courage and conviction.
“Finally, I would like to say a few more heartfelt thanks: to the thousands of volunteers who have sacrificed their time and efforts to bring this event to life; to the many donors whose generosity has enabled so many to participate regardless of means, and to the Council and Jamat of the UAE for hosting our global Jamat.
“To the parents, families, and communities who have supported our athletes, our artists, our performers, and musicians, here and at home, I convey my warmest Mubarak.

Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, has announced in a Talika (written holy message) that was read out on Friday, July 18, 2025, in Jamatkhanas across Canada that at the invitation of the President of Kenya, William Ruto, he will undertake an official visit to Kenya in August in conjunction with which he will meet with the members of the Ismaili community (Jamat) under the jurisdiction of the Aga Khan Council for Kenya. The Jamats that fall under Kenya’s jurisdiction are Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Namibia and South Africa.
In a brief announcement dated July 19, the Ismaili, the official website of the Ismaili community, confirmed the visit for August 25-27, 2025. To focus his attention on the Jamat in Kenya’s jurisdiction, Mawlana Hazar Imam has asked his worldwide followers outside Kenya’s jurisdiction not to travel to Kenya during his visit. Mawlana Hazar Imam has once again expressed his strong desire and intention to travel extensively and meet with as many Jamats as possible in person.
Mawlana Hazar Imam recently completed a historic first visit to France as the 50th Imam of the Ismaili Community. Reflecting on his visit to France, he expressed his deep satisfaction, saying, “I could not have had a first official trip better than this one.”
This sets a promising tone for his upcoming visit to Kenya, which welcomed Mawlana Shah Karim, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, several times during his 67 years of Imamat. Both Mawlana Shah Karim and his younger brother, Prince Amyn, spent memorable years growing up in Kenya.
Shortly after Mawlana Hazar Imam became the 50th Imam on February 4, 2025, President Ruto bestowed upon him and his sister, Princess Zahra, the title of the Order of the Golden Heart in recognition of their “distinguished and outstanding services rendered to the nation in various capacities and responsibilities.”
Most recently, President Ruto, in a post on X dated June 25 said that he had extended an invitation to Mawlana Hazar Imam to visit Kenya for the signing of an agreement for the recognition of the Ismaili Imamat and for the conferment of Kenya’s highest civil honours, the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H.).
As a united community, we offer our humble gratitude to Mawlana Hazar Imam and congratulate Ismailis in Kenya and those under its jurisdiction on the happy news of his auspicious and significant visit. We humbly supplicate to Mawlana Shah Rahim to continue blessing the Jamats worldwide with his holy visits. All his inaugural visits will feature a motif centred on the traditional concept of Nur (Light). It is a reminder that all Hereditary Ismaili Imams are Bearers of the Noor of Imamat, guiding us on our spiritual journey and advising us on worldly matters.

July 10-13, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan in France
Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, concluded his official visit to France by gracing the France jurisdiction Jamat with a second Didar on July 13, 2025, meeting the youth of the Ismaili community and attending a special luncheon hosted by Ismaili Institutional leaders. He arrived in Paris on July 10, 2025, and on July 11, the first full day of his visit, he was warmly received at the Palais de l’Élysée by President Macron. He was accompanied by members of his family. President Macron decorated his uncle, Prince Amyn, younger brother of His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, with France’s highest and most prestigious order of merit. At the Palace, three important agreements were signed between the Ismaili Imamat and France in the presence of President Macron and His Highness. Later that same day, Mawlana Hazar Imam met with the French Foreign and Interior Ministers.
On July 12, he met with his followers in a historic first of two Didars since becoming the 50th Hereditary Imam of the Ismailis. He also granted a special mulaqat to the youth of the community.

July 1, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan meets World Bank President
His Highness the Aga Khan and Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank, met on July 1, 2025, at the Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat in Lisbon, Portugal.
This was their first meeting since His Highness assumed the Hereditary Office of the Imamat of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims and Chair of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) on February 4, 2025, following the passing of his father, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV. They had previously met at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, DC, in February 2024.
During the recent meeting, they discussed matters of mutual interest, including development priorities in Afghanistan and the wider Central Asia region, Syria, addressing the climate crisis, expanding clean energy in Africa, and job creation. The World Bank and AKDN have a long history of collaboration and partnership, spanning multiple countries and sectors.

June 21, 2025: Message from His Highness the Aga Khan to his Ismaili community in Iran
The Ismaili, the official website of the Ismaili community, has shared the following important message dated June 21, 2025, on its website. NOTE: The content within square brackets is ours to provide clarification:
“The Jamat [the Ismaili community] is informed that Mawlana Hazar Imam [His Highness the Aga Khan, the 50th Hereditary Ismaili Imam] is closely following the current conflict in the Middle East, and sent yesterday, 20th June 2025, a Talika [a holy written message] to the Jamat of Iran.
“Mawlana Hazar Imam requested the Jamat to remain calm and to follow the directions of the Council and institutions, which are providing support and assistance to protect the Jamat’s well-being.
“He has conveyed prayers for an end to the current conflict, a return to peace and tranquility, and for long term stability in the region.
“Mawlana Hazar Imam conveyed his blessings for the Jamat’s mushkil-asan [protection from difficulties], safety and security, and stated that he will send further guidance as required.”

June 18, 2025: Prince Aly Muhammad Aga Khan attends opening of Landmark exhibition at Aga Khan Museum in Toronto
Prince Aly Muhammad Aga Khan, representing Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, attended the opening of As the Sun Appears from Beyond: Twenty Years of the Al Burda Award, a landmark and significant exhibition at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto. The exhibition will be on view to visitors until February 15, 2026.
Co-curated by Dr Ulrike Al-Khamis, Director and CEO of the Aga Khan Museum, and Al Burda Fellows Fatma Mahmoud, Sara bin Safwan and Shaikha Al Zaabi, the exhibition bridges historic and modern artistic expressions, exploring themes of light, spirituality and creativity through calligraphy, ornamentation, poetry, contemporary paintings and more.

The opening ceremony, week of June 17, was attended, among others, by His Excellency Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture of the United Arab Emirates. It marked the first exhibition presented under the 2023 Memorandum of Understanding between the Aga Khan Museum and the UAE Ministry of Culture.
Speaking at the event, His Excellency Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi, said:

June 15, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan to meet with Ismaili youth during his visit to France
Following the recent announcement that Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, will visit France between July 11 and 13, 2025, and meet with the Ismaili community (Jamat) within the jurisdiction of the Aga Khan Council for France, a new announcement posted online on the France component of the Ismaili website (read announcement in English / French) says that Mawlana Hazar Imam will meet with the youth of the Ismaili community aged 15 to 25.
The announcement underscores the historical significance of the 50th Imam’s visit and the importance of youth — the community’s future leaders — to register for this meeting. In addition to the general community Didar (lit. glimpse) that the youth will have with their Imam, this specific meeting with the youth is a moment of blessing for the youth during Mawlana Hazar Imam’s visit.
His Highness took the Hereditary Throne of Imamat on February 4, 2025, succeeding his father, Mawlana Shah Karim, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, the 49th Imam. This historic visit, the first to his Ismaili community as the 50th Imam, is also a source of reverence for Ismailis worldwide. June 9, 2025: Princess Zahra Aga Khan Bestowed with an Honorary Degree of Laws by Concordia University (Includes Video)
At a momentous convocation ceremony on Monday, June 9, 2025, for the Faculty of Arts and Science at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, Princess Zahra Aga Khan was bestowed with an honorary doctorate of Laws, LLD, 2025, “for her inspired leadership, shaping futures through education, healthcare and cultural stewardship.” This event, coinciding with Concordia’s 50th-anniversary celebration, marked a significant milestone in the University’s history.
Princess Zahra is the eldest child of Mawlana Shah Karim, His Late Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV (d. February 4, 2025), who was the 49th Hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims from 1957 to 2025. The Ismaili Imamat is a hereditary office in Shia Islam, representing the Imam-of-the-Time, and is a spiritual and moral authority for the Ismaili community. Princess Zahra is the older sister of his successor, Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, the 50th Imam.
Princess Zahra was accompanied to the event by her children, Sara (b. 2000) and Iliyan (b, 2002).
Concordia University Chancellor Gina Cody presided over the ceremony. Professor Anne Wade formally presented Princess Zahra’s achievements to graduands, faculty, and guests.

“I accept this honorary degree with utmost respect, humility and gratitude, on behalf of all those around the world, from remote villages to isolated valleys. Their unwavering commitment and selfless dedication to the cause of development, to improving the quality of life of people in the most vulnerable communities around the world, is the true foundation of this honour.”
The convocation ceremony was graced by Princess Zahra’s inspiring message to the graduating class. Her words, filled with hope and determination, resonated with the audience, encouraging them to embark on their future with optimism and resilience.
“You, the graduands, have had the good fortune of studying in a country that values freedom, compassion, pluralism, equity, democracy, openness to others, education, generosity, and a spirit of welcome. As part of her visit, Princess Zahra had the opportunity to meet with several Ismaili students and Aga Khan Schools graduates, all currently enrolled at Concordia. This meeting underscored the fruitful collaboration between Concordia and AKDN agencies on various educational initiatives since 2010. The University’s scholarships for select Aga Khan Schools graduates have been instrumental in enabling them to pursue and complete higher education in Canada.

We have a shared responsibility to care for our oceans, which cover three quarters of the Earth’s surface. As part of the fight against climate change, our institutions are helping to ensure the protection of these precious natural resources. — His Highness the Aga Khan
Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, is attending the third United Nations Oceans Conference (UNOC), in Nice, France, from June 9 to June 13, 2025. Co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, the conference’s overarching theme is “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.”
The conference brings together over 60 countries as well as intergovernmental organisations, international financial institutions, NGOs, civil society organisations, academic institutions and other actors committed to supporting the oceans.
The Ismaili Imamat and its institutions work closely with France in multiple areas of activity, and AKDN is a Knowledge Partner of the Conference. Drawing on decades of experience in supporting coastal communities, the Aga Khan Foundation is implementing the Indian Ocean Coastal Regeneration Initiative in India, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan and Tanzania, to strengthen the livelihoods of millions of coastal residents and protect and restore 100,000 hectares of coastal ecosystems.

In a press release dated March 7, 2025, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) announced the names of five Honorary Fellows, including Mawlana Shah Karim, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, who would be inducted into the RAIC College at a special ceremony in Montreal. An Honorary Fellow of the RAIC College is an Honorary Member of the RAIC who has achieved international professional eminence or has rendered distinctive service to the profession or the community at large, nationally or internationally. Honorary Fellowship is bestowed for life and is among the highest honours the RAIC can confer upon a non-member.

May 30, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan to visit France, July 11-13, 2025
Mawlana Hazar Imam Shah Rahim Al Hussaini, His Highness the Aga Khan, who succeeded his father, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV (d. February 4, 2025), as the 50th Hereditary Ismaili Imam, has announced his upcoming visit to France. This significant event will take place from July 11 to 13, 2025, at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron. One of the key highlights of this visit is His Highness’s meeting with his Ismaili community (Jamat) under the jurisdiction of the Council for France. The commencement of his visit on July 11, 2025, would have commemorated the 68th Imamat Day of his predecessor, Mawlana Shah Karim, the 49th Imam, who had succeeded to the Throne of Imamat on July 11, 1957.
This will be his first Jamati visit as the 50th Hazar Imam (Present and Living Imam) of the Ismailis. To focus his attention on the Jamat in this jurisdiction, His Highness has asked his worldwide followers outside the jurisdiction of the Aga Khan Council for France not to travel to France during his visit. The French jurisdiction includes the Jamat from France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Côte d’Ivoire. Mawlana Hazar Imam has expressed his strong desire and intention to travel extensively and have opportunities to meet with as many Jamats as possible in person.

May 22, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan is received by the Emir of Qatar, vISITS mUSEUM OF Islamic Art, AND the AKDN SIGNS two Agreements
Qatar media reports that the Emir (Amir) of the State of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, received Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, at his office at Lusail Palace on the morning of Thursday, May 22, 2025. Mawlana Hazar Imam was accompanied by his younger brother, Prince Aly Muhammad. During the meeting, they discussed key developments in relation to charitable, humanitarian, and cultural work and exchanged views on a host of topics of mutual concern.

The Ismaili reports that during Mawlana Hazar Imam’s visit, two agreements were signed: a Memorandum of Understanding between the Aga Khan Development Network and the Qatar Fund for Development, which aims to advance inclusive and sustainable development, particularly in support of countries facing urgent and multifaceted challenges, and a collaboration agreement between the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the Qatar Museums.
The agreements will enable deeper collaboration in regions of common interest, including Central and South Asia and the Middle East, in fields such as economic empowerment, healthcare, climate resilience, education, training for heritage preservation, urban revitalisation, and music.
Mawlana Hazar Imam and Prince Aly Muhammad also visited the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha. The visit continues the Ismaili Imamat’s enduring engagement with countries in the Gulf region, including the State of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and the Sultanate of Oman. Collaboration with Qatari institutions began in 2010 when Mawlana Shah Karim visited Doha at the conclusion of the 11th cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (see flashback picture, below).

May 19-20, 2025: Prince Amyn Aga Khan in Houston for Aga Khan Museum Gala and Ismaili Center Progress
Prince Amyn Aga Khan, younger brother of His Late Highness Aga Khan IV and uncle of his successor, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, visited Houston, Texas, for the Aga Khan Museum’s 10th Anniversary Gala and reviewed progress on the construction of the Ismaili Center.
The Aga Khan Museum in Toronto celebrated the 10th anniversary of its inauguration in 2024. It was opened by His Late Highness and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on September 12, 2014.
The Houston Gala was attended by museum supporters and invited guests, including Houston Mayor John Whitmire. Through its innovative online and in-person programs, the Museum reaches millions of people worldwide. It is home to a growing Permanent Collection of over 1,200 masterpieces, including manuscripts, paintings, ceramics, and textiles from the 9th to the 21st century.

Pakistan’s daily, Dawn, in an ongoing live update on the Pakistan-India conflict, says in its May 10, 2025, edition that Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, has written to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the United Nations Secretary-General offering his assistance in de-escalating the situation between Pakistan and India. The following is Dawn’s report:
Prince Rahim Aga Khan has written to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the United Nations chief, offering his assistance in de-escalation between Pakistan and India.
According to a letter — see image below — by Prince Rahim to PM Shehbaz, dated May 9 and seen by Dawn.com, the Aga Khan wrote: “Like many others around the world, I am extremely concerned about the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan since the 22nd April attack in [occupied] Kashmir.
“It is my hope and prayer that a peaceful resolution to this conflict [would] be rapidly achieved in order to limit loss of life and injury on both sides,” he added.
Stressing that the Ismaili Imamat was a “non-political institution with strong historical relations with India and Pakistan”, Prince Rahim said: “I am therefore writing to offer my assistance in any way which Your Excellency thinks could be helpful, including mediation, in order to end this dispute.”
He noted that he had also written to UN Secretary General António Guterres, the Aga Khan, “offering my support in any way deemed appropriate — in creating the conditions to allow a lasting return to peace”.
And in a related news, Pakistan’s Daily Times, under the heading “Prince Rahim Aga Khan proposes mediation to resolve Pakistan-India conflict,” writes:
Prince Rahim Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of the Ismaili community, has offered to mediate between Pakistan and India amid rising tensions between the two nations. According to reports, Prince Rahim expressed concern over the escalating situation and wrote letters to the Prime Ministers of both Pakistan and India, proposing his assistance as a neutral mediator. He emphasized that the ongoing tension between the countries poses a significant threat to the region.
The spiritual leader highlighted the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict, hoping that further loss of life could be avoided. In his letters, Prince Rahim Aga Khan urged both governments to consider dialogue and mediation in order to prevent the situation from worsening. April 5, 2025: Prince Amyn, Prince Hussain, Princess Fareen and Prince Aly Muhammad attend dazzling concert performance by Aga Khan Master Musicians
Members of the family of Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan — his uncle Prince Amyn, younger brothers Prince Hussain, accompanied by his wife Princess Fareen, and Prince Aly Muhammad — joined a sold-out audience to witness new developments in the Aga Khan Master Musicians’ pioneering music making across borders and cultures.
The world concert premiered on April 5, 2025, at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris where a quintet of Aga Khan Master Musicians collaborated with two eminent French performers in an extraordinary event that offered compelling new insights into music from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Guests at the concert included leaders of the Ismaili community, representatives of the State and French ministries, members of the Senate, ambassadors from several countries, and delegates from the artistic and cultural scene in Paris. The Musée du Quai Branly commissioned the event on behalf of the French Ministry of Culture.
At a post-concert reception, Prince Amyn spoke of the Ismaili Imamat’s cultural endeavours and explained how music can play a unifying role in today’s world.
“Your very presence supports the mission my brother [49th Ismaili Imam, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV] and I had defined when first creating the Aga Khan Music Programme over 25 years ago — a mission to support, celebrate and validate extraordinary artists and also creators of music inspired by the musical and poetic traditions of the Great East,” he said.
“The great medieval Eastern philosophers, many of whom were also music theorists and talented musicians, had a profound understanding of the power of sound to affect the human psyche and the emotions and to bring people together, to unite them, as we all share the same five senses.”
Seven accomplished musicians with unique musical traditions came together in an intensive, week-long residency. The result was not just new music but a unique blend of their respective traditions, creating a collection of truly exceptional works inspired by the ancient routes that connected trade and culture between Asia and the Mediterranean.
The vibrant musical partnership will develop further, with concerts planned in Geneva on July 5, 2025, and at the Edinburgh International Festival on August 22, 2025.

Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, attended a high-level event at the summit hosted by French President Macron on March 27, 2025, reaffirming Aga Khan Development Network’s (AKDN) commitment to advancing nutrition and food security. Malnutrition is one of the greatest threats to human development. It affects millions worldwide, particularly in regions facing poverty, conflict and the harshest effects of climate change — areas where AKDN is actively engaged.
In his Takht-nishini Farman (guidance to his Ismaili followers on February 11, 2025), Mawlana Hazar Imam spoke of the need to care for the vulnerable and those in need, and referred to access to good nutrition as a key element in this effort.
Hosted by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the N4G Steering Group and the Paris Peace Forum — of which AKDN is a founding partner — the Summit is taking place on 27-28 March, following a 20-year tradition of being organised by the host country of the most recent Olympic and Paralympic Games.

March 27, 2025: Prince Amyn Aga Khan visits Houston, Texas, to review progress on Ismaili Center
Members of the Ismaili Center Oversight Committee, including Prince Amyn Aga Khan, uncle of His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan and younger brother of Late Prince Karim Aga Khan (d. February 4, 2025), visited Houston this week to review the ongoing progress of the Ismaili Center. During his visit, Prince Amyn met with members of the Design Team to review significant updates to the project, including proposed artwork to be installed and its placement, the trees and plants in the gardens, and various internal and external finishes in the building. Additionally, discussions were held about types of programs expected to be held at the Center.

March 21, 2025: Nawruz Message from His Highness the Aga Khan
This week, Ismaili Muslims worldwide and hundreds of millions of people living in Iran, Central and South Asia, and their diasporic communities are celebrating Nawruz (Navroz). This ancient festival, with roots that stretch back thousands of years, marks the beginning of the New Year. It is a time of spiritual renewal and physical rejuvenation, celebrated around the spring equinox, typically on March 20 or 21. The festival is a testament to the rich cultural and historical traditions of the regions where it is celebrated, signifying a time of gratitude for blessings and an outlook of hope and optimism.
For the first time in 67 years, the Ismailis celebrated Navroz, March 21, 2025, under their new Imam His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, whom they lovingly and respectfully address as Mawlana Hazar Imam, a term of endearment and respect, with ‘Mawlana’ meaning ‘our Lord’ and ‘Hazar Imam’ meaning ‘present or living Imam’. He became their 50th Imam on February 4, 2025, upon the death of his father, Mawlana Shah Karim Aga Khan. The Imam sent an inspiring Talika (written holy message) read out in Ismaili Jamatkhanas, showering his spiritual children with blessings.
The Aga Khan also shared a brief message through the official website of the Ismaili Muslim community. The message appears under the Ismaili Imamat’s unique emblem and reads as follows:

March 17, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan announces €100 million for Syria’s development at brussels conference
In his first public engagement since assuming office as the 50th Hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and Chair of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) — since the death of his father, His Late Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, on February 4, 2025 — Mawlana Shah Rahim Al-Hussaini, His Highness the Aga Khan, spoke at the European Commission’s ninth annual conference in support of Syria, “Standing with Syria: meeting the needs for a successful transition”.
His Highness pledged, on behalf of the Ismaili Imamat and the Aga Khan Development Network, a minimum of €100 million over two years to help address the country’s urgent humanitarian and development needs.
Aiming to galvanise international support for a Syrian-owned, inclusive transition, the conference focused on “the most critical humanitarian, recovery, and reconstruction assistance” for Syria and its neighbouring countries.

“We commit today to make available a minimum of €100 million over the next two years toward Syria’s recovery. With our partners, we intend to scale up humanitarian efforts; to invest in renewable energy and other vital areas of the economy; to expand the provision of health care and education; to address food insecurity; and to restore and preserve Syria’s rich cultural assets. This work will require critical enabling conditions, foremost of which is an end to violence, and a commitment to peace by all parties.

Syria’s Interim Foreign Minister, His Excellency Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, was in attendance, together with representatives of the United Nations, Syria’s neighbouring states and other regional and international partners. The event built on the Paris Conference on Syria, held on February 13, 2025.
The conference was co-hosted by Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy; Dubravka Śuica, EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean; and Hadja Lahbib, EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Response. “We must spare no effort to assist an inclusive transition that gives all Syrians a chance to rebuild their country in line with their aspirations,” said Kaja Kallas.

March 10, 2025: Prince Amyn Aga Khan attends Commonwealth Day Service
Prince Amyn Aga Khan, uncle of the 50th Imam of the Ismaili Muslims, His Highness the Aga Khan, Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini, attended the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey in London on Monday, March 10, 2025, in the presence of His Majesty King Charles III and other senior members of the Royal Family. Prince Amyn, representing the vice-president of the Royal Commonwealth Society — a position held by Mawlana Shah Karim, His Highness the Aga Khan IV (d. February 4, 2025) for several years — led the procession of Loyal Societies at the service. Senior leaders of the UK Ismaili community were also present.
Commonwealth Day is an annual celebration observed by millions of people across Africa, Asia, the Americas, the Pacific, and Europe.
“The Commonwealth’s ability to bring together people from all over the world has stood the test of time and remains as ever-important today,” said King Charles in his Commonwealth Day Message. “Leaders recently reiterated the importance of collaboration for peace and human rights, as well as for the restoration of Nature both on land and in the oceans.”

March 7, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan and Princess Zahra Receive Highest Honours from Kenya
President William Ruto of Kenya has conferred on Mawlana Shah Rahim Al Hussaini Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan V, and his sister, Princess Zahra, the prestigious Order of the Golden Heart. The Order is split into three classes: Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H.), Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (E.G.H.) and Moran of the Order of the Golden Heart.
Mawlana Hazar Imam was honoured with Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart, and Princess Zahra was awarded Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart in recognition of their “distinguished and outstanding services rendered to the nation in various capacities and responsibilities,” according to an official Presidential notice in The Kenya Gazette notice dated February 28, 2025.
The Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart, established in 1966, is the highest honour awarded by the Kenyan government. President Kibaki bestowed it on the late 49th Imam, Mawlana Shah Karim, His Highness the Aga Khan IV, during his Golden Jubilee visit to Kenya in August 2007.

February 20-26, 2025: Princess Zahra Aga Khan attends Aga Khan University Convocation ceremonies in Pakistan and East Africa
The weeklong graduations across AKU’s campuses concluded with Princess Zahra attending the last ceremony in Karachi, after earlier celebrations in Kampala, Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. The ceremonies also reflected on the University’s past and future, honouring its founding Chancellor, Mawlana Shah Karim, while celebrating its continued growth. Graduates earned degrees in various fields including nursing, midwifery, medicine, education, digital journalism and media leadership.

February 26, 2025: His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan appoints Princess Zahra as Pro-Chancellor of the Aga Khan University
Princess Zahra, the longest-serving member of AKU’s Board of Trustees, has taken on a new and significant role. She was appointed by His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V to serve as the University’s Pro-Chancellor and act on his behalf. This important announcement was made by the Chair of the Board of Trustees, Zakir Mahmood, during the graduation ceremony where 473 women and men graduated from the Aga Khan University (AKU) in Pakistan on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. The event also served as a poignant tribute to the late Founder and first Chancellor, His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV.
“Princess Zahra’s appointment shows the strong commitment of His Highness to build on and advance the legacy of our founding Chancellor and his conviction in the mission and vision of the University,” Chair Mahmood said. He cited Princess Zahra’s deep understanding of AKU’s plans, programmes and founding vision, and her close involvement in its growth and evolution over two decades.
“It brings me much happiness that my brother, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, in accordance with my father’s wishes and the founding charter of AKU, has become Chancellor,” Princess Zahra said. “I am deeply honoured that His Highness has appointed me Pro-Chancellor of AKU, so that, together — in our respective roles — we may continue to sustain and strengthen this remarkable institution, remaining true to our father’s vision for the University.”
Students earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in 16 different fields in nursing, medicine and education. More than 70 percent of the graduates are women. To date, AKU has awarded nearly 16,000 degrees, diplomas and postgraduate certificates in Pakistan.
“Looking out at the Class of 2024 today, I see women and men who are, without question, ready to play their part in creating a world that is rich in opportunity,” said President Sulaiman Shahabuddin.

February 24, 2025: Princess Zahra attends AKU graduation ceremony in Tanzania
The Aga Khan University (AKU) celebrated the graduation of its Class of 2024 in Tanzania on Monday. With Princess Zahra Aga Khan in attendance, the University paid tribute to its late founder and first Chancellor, His Highness the Aga Khan IV, and welcomed his successor, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V. Princess Zahra Aga Khan highlighted that the AKU alumni are “leaders and change agents who transform their professions, take on societal challenges and uplift humanity.”
Seventy-one nurses, doctors, journalists and educators were conferred degrees in their respective disciplines. This comes at a time when the University is expanding its scope, with nine new degrees launched in the last three years, including a four-year Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing in Tanzania. The University also celebrated outstanding contributions and academic excellence among faculty and students.

Aga Khan University News reports that the Aga Khan University (AKU) celebrated the graduation of its Class of 2024 in Kenya on Saturday, February 22, 2025. With Princess Zahra Aga Khan in attendance, the University paid tribute to its late founder and first Chancellor, His Highness the Aga Khan IV, and welcomed his successor, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V.
One hundred and sixty-four women and men were conferred degrees in nursing, midwifery, education, digital journalism, media leadership and medicine. For the first time ever, graduates of the Medical College, East Africa’s fellowship programme participated in Convocation, with 16 fellows receiving certificates in cardiology, medical oncology, neonatology, nuclear medicine and paediatric neurology.

The Ugandan media, including The Monitor and the news-breaking website Chimpreports, have reported that Princess Zahra Aga Khan, the older sister of the new Ismaili Imam, Mawlana Shah Rahim, His Highness the Aga Khan, has commenced a tour of East African countries. Her first stop is in Uganda, where she graced the graduation ceremony at the Kampala Serena Hotel on February 20, 2025. Her visit also included a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni at State Lodge-Nakasero, where the President extended his heartfelt condolences for losing her late father, Mawlana Shah Karim. February 13, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan meets Portugal President at Palácio de Belém
Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, met with His Excellency Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of Portugal, on February 13, 2025, at the Palácio de Belém, the President’s official residence. This was his first official meeting with the President, a day after his accession as the 50th Hereditary Imam of the Ismaili Muslims.
During their discussion, the President expressed his condolences on the passing of his father, Mawlana Shah Karim, and congratulated Hazar Imam on his accession. Hazar Imam expressed gratitude for the President’s longstanding support for the Ismaili Imamat and his presence at Mawlana Shah Karim’s funeral. He also appreciated the Portuguese authorities’ support in facilitating the ceremonies.
Hazar Imam and the President reaffirmed the deep and enduring relationship between the Ismaili Imamat, the Aga Khan Development Network and the Portuguese Republic. They discussed the ongoing collaboration grounded in shared values and reflected in innovative agreements. They also expressed their commitment to further strengthening this partnership.

February 10, 2025: His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan receives the President of Pakistan and leaders of the Dawoodi Bohra community

Mawlana Hazar Imam received His Excellency Asif Ali Zardari, President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, at the Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat in Lisbon. The President was on a visit to Lisbon to offer condolences and pay tribute to the life of the Late Prince Karim Aga Khan, who was dedicated to philanthropy and the welfare of the people.
In a statement on his website in English and Urdu, the President expressed his heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the people and government of Pakistan, saying that the nation mourned the loss of a “true friend” and “great philanthropist.”
The President said that he had deeply been touched by the passing of the late Aga Khan, with whom he had personal relations. He lauded the late Aga Khan’s contributions to Pakistan’s social and economic development, particularly in health care, education, community development, and poverty alleviation. “His visionary leadership improved the lives of people in Pakistan and other regions of the world,” he added.

The President informed that he was on an official visit to China when he learned of the Aga Khan’s passing. He said that he was visiting Lisbon to pay tribute to the late Prince Karim Agha Khan lifelong dedication to philanthropy and humanitarian work, adding that his services to humanity would always be remembered. January 13, 2025: Princess Zahra Aga Khan and Olli-Pekka Heinonen Renew MOU between Aga khan development network and International Baccalaureate
The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB), which first signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2010, have renewed the MoU to strengthen access to high-quality education for students across the Global South and provide richer opportunities for educational research and growth. The renewal was signed on January 13, 2025, by Princess Zahra Aga Khan, daughter of Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, and the Director General of the IB, Olli-Pekka Heinonen.

The MoU will provide a framework for collaborative work between the IB and AKDN’s agencies, including the Aga Khan Schools, Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Aga Khan University and University of Central Asia. It will cover all levels of education from early childhood to secondary school, undergraduate and graduate studies and professional development for teachers.
“AKDN and the IB share a commitment to advancing high-quality education across diverse communities,” said Director General of the IB Olli-Pekka Heinonen. “By aligning our expertise in curriculum development, teacher growth and community engagement, we will empower students and educators as agents of positive change. The IB is proud to support the AKDN’s mission of fostering global citizenship and social responsibility through innovative educational practices.”
The partnership stems from a strong alignment of values and goals between the two organisations, including pluralism, access to quality education in the Global South, continuous teacher development and inquiry-based approaches to teaching and learning.

“This renewal of AKDN’s agreement with the IB reinforces our longstanding relationship and strengthens our continued work based on a shared belief in the ability of education to achieve societal improvement,” said Princess Zahra. “AKDN looks forward to working with the IB to increase access to high-quality education that is relevant to students from diverse cultures and traditions.”
The long-standing collaborative relationship between AKDN and the IB over the past 15 years has also enabled Aga Khan Schools (AKS) to provide professional development opportunities to IB teachers across Africa, particularly through the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, which has been an external provider of IB workshops since 2010. The IB also authorised the Aga Khan Academies, a part of AKS, to provide IB Education Certificates to graduates of its Teacher Preparation Programme, which trains local educators to become IB-certified teachers.

Based in Switzerland, the International Baccalaureate is a non-profit organization offering three high-quality and challenging educational programmes for a worldwide community of schools. In 2008, on the 40th anniversary of the founding of IB, Mawlana Hazar Imam delivered the Peterson Lecture at the annual meeting of the IB in Atlanta, USA, and complimented the organization’s educational outlook. He said:
