Aga Khan 88th Birthday calligraphy
This new artwork celebrates the 88th birthday (Salgirah) of Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, on December 13, 2024. Shah Karim in Kufi Kairouani script and Imam-e-Zaman [Imam-of-the Time] in Square Kufi are repeated seven times. Calligraphy and design by Karim Ismail, Toronto.

On the occasion of the eighty-seventh birthday of Mawlana Hazar Imam, December 13th, 2023, the global Jamat submitted to the Imam a folio which included a calligraphic panel from Mughal India dating to the mid-18th century. The calligraphy, written in black nasta’liq script and enclosed within a broad band of naturalistic flowers and a narrower border with stylised floral motifs, comprises the well-known prayer known as the Nad-e ‘Ali.

The Salgirah Mubarak design is based on a heptagonal (7-sided polygon) geometry. The number seven of course symbolizes for Ismailis the values of its essential philosophy as quoted by late Karl Schlamminger. The centre contains "Shah Karim Imam-e-Zaman" i
