INTRODUCTION AND IMAMAT DAY MUBARAK

By MOHEZ NATO
As Ismailis celebrate the most blessed First Imamat Day of our Beloved Hazar Imam, Mawlana Shah Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan V, on February 4, 2026, the Jamath worldwide unites in humility, prayers and gratitude to offer our deepest gratitude to the infinite Mercy of Allah, the source of all light, guidance, and wisdom for blessing us with the sacred Institution of Imamat, which as quoted above in Mawlana Shah Karim’s and Mawlana Hazar Imam’s Farman to the Jamat in France kin 1960 and 2025 respectively, will continue (forever). On this day, we renew our Bayah to the Imam-of-the-Time, Mawlana Shah Rahim, and reaffirm our unwavering devotion to his spiritual authority. Through regular prayers and Ibadat Bandgi in the early morning hours, and through inner discipline, strength, patience, courage, and humility, we aspire to draw closer to His Noor, the living manifestation of Divine guidance in our time.
On this first Imamat Day, we respectfully offer our prayers and heartfelt wishes to Mawlana Hazar Imam for good health, long life, inner peace, and family serenity, under the protection of Allah, together with his children, Princes Irfan and Sinan.
The world continues to recognize and admire the wisdom, vision, and compassion of our Hazar Imam, as well as the steadfast commitment of the members of the Mawlana Hazar Imam’s Family, through the many spiritual, humanitarian, educational, and social initiatives of the Institutions of the Imamat worldwide. For their selfless service to humanity, we express our profound gratitude and sincere prayers.
We affirm with gratitude and pride our identity as Shia Ismaili Imami Nizari, inheritors of a living spiritual tradition rooted in faith and intellect, knowledge (‘ilm), ethics, compassion, and service.
On this day of celebration, our thoughts also turn with reverence and emotion to the blessed memory of our late 49th Imam, Mawlana Shah Karim al Hussaini. During his 67 years of Imamat, he embodied visionary leadership, tireless commitment, and deep love for his Jamath and all humanity. His spiritual and humanitarian legacy remains an enduring source of inspiration.
As faithful Murids and spiritual children of Mawlana Hazar Imam, we renew, during congregational prayers and in the inner silence of Bandgi, our sacred commitments:
- to continually strengthen our spiritual bond with the Imam of the Time, to recognize and cherish His benevolence, constant support, and living presence in our lives, to remain united as One Jamath, in a spirit of generosity, brotherhood, and mutual respect;
- to live by the teachings contained in the Farmans, Hidayats, and Talikas, which offer guidance, comfort, and blessings in an ever-changing world;
- We commit ourselves to living according to the ethics of our faith, to purifying our intentions, to serving with humility, and to progressing on the path of the Sirat al-Mustaqim;
- Holding our tasbih, we invoke the Mercy of Allah, the names of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ( Peace be upon him and his progeny), Mawlana Ali, and the blessed lineage of the Imams, while seeking the prayers, guidance, and blessings of our Hazar Imam.
On this blessed day marking the first anniversary of Mawlana Shah Rahim Hazar Imam’s accession to the Imamat, we pray that he grants us the strength to faithfully follow His guidance, to continue our spiritual journey, and to make his wisdom, perfection, and example the ideal toward which we strive.
Barakah marks this momentous occasion with a beautiful, memorable, albeit emotional pictorial compilation of Hazar Imam’s undertakings during his first year of Imamat. We extend our heartfelt Imamat Day Mubarak to Ismailis around the world on this happy, auspicious, and historic occasion.

February 4, 2025: Mawlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini passes away at 88

With profound sadness, the 12 million-strong Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims were informed that their beloved 49th Hereditary Imam, Mawlana Shah Karim al Hussaini, passed peacefully to Almighty Allah’s grace on February 4, 2025, in Lisbon, Portugal, surrounded by his family, who were with him in his final moments. At age 88 (December 13, 1936 to February 4, 2025), Mawlana Shah Karim was the longest-lived Imam in Ismaili history. He reigned over the Ismaili community for 67 years (July 11, 1957, to February 4, 2025), just three years short of his Platinum Jubilee. His predecessor, Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah, had a 71-year reign, the longest in Ismaili history.

February 5, 2025: His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan appoints his eldest son Prince Rahim, as the 50th Ismaili Imam

Since the passing of Mawlana Shah Karim a day earlier, on February 4, Ismaili Muslims worldwide were united in a profound sense of loss and brought the community together in collective grief. During this moment of sadness, the famous tradition (Hadith) of the Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him and his family) and the Qur’anic verses which follow were comforting factors, while the Ismaili community awaited the announcement of who had been designated to continue the Hereditary Imamat:
“I am leaving behind me two things: the Book and my Progeny. If you hold fast to them, you will never go astray”
and the Quranic verses (3:33-34):
“Verily, God did choose Adam and Noah, the progeny of Abraham, and the progeny of Imran above all the worlds, descendants, one from the other: And God heareth and knoweth all things”
With deep happiness the Ismailis learnt that Mawlana Shah Karim designated, through the Nass, Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan V, as their beloved 50th Imam. A press release (PDF format) dated February 5, 2025, issued in Lisbon by the Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat said:
“Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan V was today named the 50th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, following the unsealing of the Will of his late father, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV, who died in Lisbon, Portugal yesterday, aged 88. Prince Rahim Aga Khan V is a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) through his daughter, Hazrat Bibi Fatima, and the Prophet’s cousin and son-in-law, Hazrat Ali, the fourth Rightly Guided Caliph of Islam and the first Shia Imam.
“Throughout their 1,400 year history, the Ismailis have been led by a living, hereditary Imam. The Ismailis live in over 35 countries and number approximately 12 to 15 million.”

February 8, 2025: The funeral ceremony of His Highness the Aga Khan, the 49th Imam of the Ismaili Muslims
The funeral ceremony of Mawlana Shah Karim was held at the Ismaili Centre, Lisbon, and was live-streamed on Ismaili TV. About 300 invited guests attended a solemn ceremony. Mawlana Shah Karim’s portrait shone through the screen as a pre-recorded devotional prayer, Shukran Lillah wal Hamdulillah, was played in a mellow, beautiful tone. This was followed by the reading of translations of Qur’an verses to be recited during the funeral. The emcee spoke about the profound notion of the Divine Institution of Imamat, tracing its Divine roots to the Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him and his family). She emphasized that all the forty-nine Ismaili Imams over the past 1400 years have been bearers of the same Light (Nur), a tradition that unites all Shia Ismaili Muslims.
Then the new Imam, Mawlana Shah Rahim Al Hussaini, and his family came into view, walking through the hallway corridors of the Ismaili Centre. The Salwaat was continuously recited, a unified voice of the community, until the Imam and his family took their seats in the funeral hall. Then, there was a moment of beholding and strong feeling as the casket carrying the body of the deceased 49th Imam came into view. Volunteers of the Jamat, a symbol of our collective strength, carried it into the funeral hall. It was placed in front of the first row where the 50th Imam, Mawlana Shah Rahim, and his family were seated. Draped in white cloth, the historic emblem of Mawlana Shah Karim, embroidered in gold, was visible on top.

The Qur’anic verses, earlier translated into Portuguese and English, were beautifully recited. The invited guests were then requested to pay their last respects to the late Imam by walking past the casket. After the Imam’s family members had offered their respects, everyone in the hall stood for the Fateha prayer for the deceased. The male family members were then called to carry the janaza; they were joined by other designated community members. The casket was lifted and lowered a few times, as is customary in Muslim tradition. The casket was carried in the front by the new Imam and his uncle, Prince Amyn, who dedicated his life to the service of his brother. Accompanying the janaza was the continuous recitation of the Muslim declaration of faith, “Lā ʾIlāha ʾIllā Allah, Muḥammadun Rasūl Allah,” meaning, “There is no deity but God, and Muhammad is His Messenger,” a unifying declaration for all Muslims, regardless of their religious persuasion, whether they be Shias or Sunnis.
With the Imam’s passing, the Holy Qur’an, the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad, the historical events at the end of the Prophet’s lifetime, and the profound messages of the Imams in subsequent centuries assured the Ismailis of the Eternal Rope of Imamat. While bulbs will change, their power source is steady and constant.

February 11, 2025: his highness prince rahim aga khan is enthroned as 50th imam of ismaili muslims

The Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat in Lisbon was the setting for a momentous and significant event in the Ismaili community’s history on February 11, 2025, the Takht-nishini of Mawlana Shah Rahim al-Hussaini Hazar Imam, on his ascension to the office of Imamat as 50th Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims.
After Mawlana Shah Rahim had taken his seat, the leaders of the Jamat presented to Hazar Imam the khilat (robe) of the preceding 49th Imam that he had been wearing since his Golden Jubilee in 2007. Two other items were a chain bearing the names of 50 Imams instead of 49 Imams and a signet ring symbolizing the transfer of the office of Imamat. Mawlana Shah Rahim took the ring from the tray and placed it on his finger.
A rendition of the Nashid al-Imamah (the Ismaili anthem) was played, and the ceremonial symbols of authority — the Holy Qur’an, the Ismaili Constitution, a ceremonial sword, an intricate parasol, and an inkwell — were presented to Mawlana Shah Rahim. The items signify the inheritance of authority and Nur (light), which, unbroken for more than 1400 years, will continue to illuminate the Ismailis’ path in the decades to come. Hazar Imam then signed a constitutional instrument ordained on December 13, 1986, on Mawlana Shah Karim’s 50th birthday.
A hush fell upon the room as the Imam stepped forward to address his Jamat for the first time. Mawlana Hazar Imam graciously delivered a Farman Mubarak (edict or guidance) to assembled leaders and the Jamat worldwide. In this significant address, he accepted the Jamat’s pledges, paid tribute to his late father, thanked his family for their presence and support, and spoke of his priorities for the Jamat. He earnestly offered prayers for mushkil-asan (protection from difficulties), a comforting reminder of his unwavering care, and reassured his spiritual children that they were always with him.

Mawlana Hazar Imam pledged to dedicate his life to caring for the Ismaili Jamat’s spiritual and material well-being. He spoke of the principles of the Ismaili Muslim faith, the importance of balancing worldly and spiritual matters, and the regular practice of the faith. His Farman focused on universal concepts of peace, tolerance, inclusion and support for those in need. He said he wants his Jamat to be loyal and active citizens of the countries where they live, and urged us to lead by example on climate change, reminding us of the global impact of our actions. Leaders of the Jamat then humbly submitted a gift of a manuscript titled Munajat Hazrat Ali Amir al-Mu’minin, comprising a selection of silent or whispered prayers of our first Imam, Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him), on behalf of the global Jamat to commemorate the historic moment of Mawlana Shah Rahim al-Hussaini Hazar Imam’s Takht-nishini.
As the ceremony came to a close, each Ismaili Muslim watching felt a sense of connection. They knew that their new Imam, like his father, would guide them with grace, wisdom, and a resolute dedication to the spiritual and material progress of the worldwide Jamat. They felt reassured that their Imam was always with his spiritual children.
Sad as it was a few days earlier when the Ismaili world learned about the death of their beloved 49th Imam, Mawlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini, the Takht-nishini of his successor, Mawlana Shah Rahim, was one of the most inspirational and significant days in the life of the Ismaili community in 67 years, the length of the Imamat of Mawlana Shah Karim.

I could not have had a first official trip better than this one — His Highness the Aga Khan, Paris, July 13, 2025.
July 11, 2025: Arrival in France, official welcome by President Macron, and signing of Agreements

Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, accompanied by his sons, Prince Irfan and Prince Sinan, arrived in France on the evening of Thursday, July 10, 2025. This marks a historic moment, as it is his first Jamati (community) visit to any part of the world since succeeding to the Throne of Imamat on February 4, 2025.

He was received on Friday, July 11, 2025, at the Élysée Palace by President Macron for a luncheon and private discussions to begin his official visit to France. He was accompanied by his uncle, Prince Amyn, his brothers, Prince Hussain and Prince Aly Muhammad, and leaders of the Ismaili community and the AKDN. The following three agreements were signed at the Élysée:
1. Agreement between the French Republic and the Ismaili Imamat

The agreement reinforces a long-standing and deep relationship. It spans the domains of development investment, humanitarian support, health care, education, higher education and research, culture and the arts, agriculture development, food security, infrastructure, environmental protection, the fight against climate change, and social cohesion. It also facilitates dialogue and cooperation in matters of international relations, with the aim of fostering peace and stability, reinforcing respect for pluralism, developing a strong and effective civil society, and promoting interfaith dialogue. The agreement recognises the presence of the Ismaili Imamat in France, including through official representation between the two parties and a joint coordinating committee.
2. Declaration of Intention to Cooperate in Syria
France and the Ismaili Imamat signed a declaration confirming their intention to cooperate for the successful and peaceful transition in Syria, protection of human dignity, rebuilding resilience and resettling displaced people. Cooperation will include responses to the urgent need for humanitarian assistance, and investments in the foundation for the sustainable, long-term development of the country, including rebuilding the economy through agricultural support and entrepreneurship; reinforcing the healthcare system; and providing cultural support to create employment and catalyse economic growth.

3. Declaration of Intention to Cooperate in the Indian Ocean Region
France and the Ismaili Imamat signed a declaration of their intention to cooperate on the regeneration of coastal zones and marine ecosystems in the Indian Ocean region. Notably, this initiative will include support for the reconstruction and sustainable development of Mayotte. The partnership will encompass four key priorities: protection and restoration of coastal ecosystems, in particular mangroves; the promotion of nature-based solutions to respond to the climate crisis; the development of opportunities in the blue and green economies; and the reduction of pressure on coastal and marine zones by improved access to drinking water, energy, waste management and improved agricultural practices. The agreement envisages the joint mobilisation of Euro 100 million to support action in Mayotte, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique and Tanzania.
President Emmanuel Macron of France honours Prince Amyn with the Officier de la Légion d’honneur,
A notable aspect of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s visit to the Palace to begin his official visit to France was the award of Officier de la Légion d’honneur (Officer of the Legion of Honour) bestowed on Prince Amyn Aga Khan by President Emmanuel Macron, in recognition of his many decades of work to improve the lives of people in France and beyond.
The Légion d’honneur is the highest and most prestigious French order of merit. It was bestowed on Mawlana Shah Karim, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, in 2018, during his Diamond Jubilee.

President Macron recalled during the ceremony that it was on this day [July 11] 68 years ago, that Mawlana Shah Karim, His Late Highness, became the Imam of the Ismailis. In fondly remembering Mawlana Shah Karim, the older brother of Prince Amyn, President Emmanuel Macron said:
“As I decorate you today, I am moved as I think of His late Highness the Aga Khan IV, and touched as I evoke his memory. As mentioned earlier, it was precisely on 11th July, 68 years ago, that he became the Imam.“
Following his visit to Élysée Palace, Mawlana Hazar Imam was welcomed to Quai d’Orsay, the seat of France’s Foreign Ministry, by the Foreign Minister, Jean-Noël Barrot.

In welcoming Mawlana Hazar Imam, the Foreign Minister expressed the country’s shared desire to cooperate with the Ismaili Imamat in the service of the common good.
He said: “We are doing so with a high level of ambition to build together a global, coherent and effective vision.” He further expressed the hope that the “partnership will take us as far as possible along this path of responsibility, towards peace, development and the promotion of human dignity.”

Mawlana Hazar Imam also met with government officials, including the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, at Place Beauvau, the official residence of the Minister of the Interior.
Two agreements in the field of culture were signed: between the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) and the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage (ALIPH); and between AKTC and the Musée Guimet. These agreements formalise ongoing cooperation and create the framework for new projects.

November 6, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan and Mayor John Whitmire inaugurate Ismaili Center, Houston

Thursday, November 6, 2025, marked a historic day in the life of the Ismaili Muslims of the USA as Mawlana Hazar Imam and the Honorable Mayor of Houston, John Whitmire, officially inaugurated the Ismaili Center in Houston.
It was also a historic day in the context of six other beautiful Ismaili Centres that were conceived and inaugurated around the world between 1985 and 2014 by His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, Mawlana Shah Karim, the 49th Imam. The Ismaili Center Houston, first conceived by Mawlana Shah Karim in 2006, was inaugurated by his Hereditary successor, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan.

The new seventh Ismaili Center in Houston is situated on more than nine acres of gardens and green space. It is in close proximity to Houston’s downtown core, featuring fantastic cultural spaces. The Ismaili Center, with its unique architecture and cultural programs, will serve as a hub for cultural, artistic and educational exchange, connecting the Ismaili community with the rest of Houston and contributing to the city’s rich cultural tapestry.

Mawlana Hazar Imam’s uncle, Prince Amyn, the younger brother of the late Imam, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, and his two younger brothers, Prince Hussain and Prince Aly Muhammad, attended the ceremony alongside members of Congress, Texas state legislators, and representatives of faith communities from across the country.
The soft tunes from a team of musicians from Central Asia filled the air as the 3rd-floor social hall, the space chosen for the inauguration, began to fill up shortly after 10:00 AM. A simple yet beautiful stage had been set up with flags of the USA, the State of Texas, and the Ismaili Imamat at one end, and the inauguration plaque, waiting to be unveiled, at the other. When the arrival of His Highness the Aga Khan’s motorcade was announced, everyone’s attention was drawn to the TV screen. His Highness then warmly received Mayor John Whitmire. The audience was asked to rise as the dignitaries entered the inauguration hall. A rendering of the American National Anthem was sung by a group of Ismaili youth, followed by a musical rendition of the Nashid al Imamah, a significant part of the Ismaili community’s culture during events such as this. This Nashid is somewhat equivalent in tune to what was once regarded by community members as its anthem, the “Noore-Rasullilah,” which marked the commencement of important events for decades before the musical rendition of the Nashid was introduced during the Golden Jubilee of His Late Highness in 2008.

The recitations were then followed on the stage with an Arabic reading of a Quranic verse from Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13) and its English translation, which reads as follows:
“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.” — Al-Hujurat, The Dwellings, 49:13.
Al-Karim Alidina, President of the Aga Khan Ismaili Council for the USA, welcomed guests and traced the project’s origins to a long-term vision. “His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan had a decades-long aspiration to establish an Ismaili Center in the United States,” he said, “one that would reflect the values and identity of the Ismaili community. So today marks a moment of pride and joy for the community.”

~~~~~~~~
In his extempore speech, Mayor Whitmire passionately spoke of the magnitude and historic nature of the landmark occasion. “The Ismaili community working with the city of Houston residents,” he said, “our region, our state of Texas, and the United States — we’re making a statement today that we’re all in this together. The Mayor looked forward to the Center’s impact in the city and beyond: “This is only the beginning of something great,” he said. His remarks were met with a rousing reception from the audience and greatly appreciated by His Highness.
In his address, Mawlana Hazar Imam reflected on his father Mawlana Shah Karim’s vision for the building and its gardens, his personal interest in their design, and his wish to designate the Ismaili Center in Houston as a Diamond Jubilee project. Mawlana Hazar Imam also spoke about his own aspirations for the building and its intended use. “This building may be called an Ismaili Center, but it is not here for Ismailis only. It is for all Houstonians to use; a place open to all who seek knowledge, reflection, and dialogue,” he said.
“Whether through hosting recitals, launching books, presenting concerts, promoting local artists, or offering training, our intent is to provide a constant rhythm of events that spark curiosity, engender understanding, and encourage exchange.” However, in his remarks, he did emphasize the importance of the building as a Jamatkhana, a space for Ismaili worship.
Hazar Imam thanked the Mayor’s office, design team, project committee, leaders of the Jamat, donors, and the many volunteers for their time, effort, and dedication. His Highness also acknowledged the support of the mayors preceding Mayor Whitmore. He thanked the entire building team, including the architect, the landscape architects, and the engineers.
In paying a special tribute to his uncle Prince Amyn, he said that his “guidance, commitment, and close personal engagement over many years have been pivotal to the creation of Ismaili Centres across the world, and to this Ismaili Center here in Houston. He has been a constant and regular presence on this site and at deliberations throughout planning and execution. I am profoundly grateful for his insight and contribution.”
The Mayor and His Highness then unveiled the plaque, etched in Gold. The plaque spanning 12 rows reads:
BISMILLAHIR RAHMANIR RAHIM (inscription is in Arabic)
THE CREST OF THE ISMAILI IMAMAT
followed by:
THE OPENING CEREMONY OF
MAYOR OF HOUSTON
IN THE PRESENCE OF
HIS HIGHNESS PRINCE RAHIM AGA KHAN
FIFTIETH IMAM
OF THE SHIA IMAMI ISMAILI MUSLIMS
ON NOVEMBER SIXTH, 2025
After congratulatory exchanges, the dignitaries left the inauguration hall. Many visitors stayed behind to have their photos taken on the stage in front of or alongside the Flags and the inauguration plaque. In contrast, others were guided to the reception area in the large verandah where volunteers walked around and served a variety of tasty hors d’oeuvres accompanied by delicious light sherbet and a fruit drink.
On November 6, 2025, Mawlana Hazar Imam and Houston Mayor John Whitmire inaugurated the Ismaili Center in Houston, which features a prayer hall, the Jamatkhana, of impressive capacity, accommodating approximately 1,500 people. It’s essential to note that in countries where Ismaili Muslims reside in large numbers and have several houses of worship, the Imam-of-the-Time (Hazar Imam) plays a pivotal role in selecting one to serve as the country’s principal or chief Jamatkhana, a decision made with great care and consideration.
In a significant announcement during his two meetings (Didar) with his followers in Houston, Texas, on Friday, November 7, 2025, Mawlana Hazar Imam, in his Farman (guidance), designated the Ismaili Center Jamatkhana as the Darkhana of the USA.
November 28, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan’s Message to AKU Symposium in Karachi on Climate Change
As Pakistan’s top architects, urban planners and public health experts convened on November 28, 2025, in Karachi, Pakistan, to develop strategies for building climate-resilient cities and communities in response to record temperatures and extreme flooding, Mawlana Hazar Imam, sent a statement to delegates, which was read in the conference’s opening session.
In statement, read by AKU’s President Sulaiman Shahabuddin, Mawlana Hazar Imam said”
“You meet at a time when Pakistan has once again endured devastating floods, exposing the vulnerabilities of mountain communities, downstream cities, and rural communities. Such events remind us that extreme weather may be the trigger, but it is human choices that determine the magnitude of loss. Encroachment on waterways, weak land-use planning, inadequate building standards, use of inappropriate construction materials, and chronic under-investment in essential infrastructure have magnified the risks.
“Climate change is one of the greatest threat multipliers of our era. Its impacts intensify disease, malnutrition, displacement, learning loss, and poverty. These burdens fall disproportionately upon women, children, older adults, and marginalized communities. Addressing them is not optional; it is imperative for equity, stability, and sustainable development….The issues before us are immense. But through scientific discourse, research and partnership, we can shape a future in which our built environment strengthens resilience and reduces vulnerability.
December 3, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan’s visit to Portugal
Mawlana Hazar Imam arrival in Portugal on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, highlighted a moment of pride and unity for the Ismaili community worldwide as he visited his Ismaili followers in Portugal and Spain.
December 3, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan graces his spiritual children with a Didar
Mawlana Hazar Imam, who arrived in Lisbon earlier on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, graced his Ismaili spiritual children in Portugal and Spain with a Didar, fulfilling their heartfelt wish since the visit was first announced on October 31, 2025. This was the first time that the Jamats of Portugal and Spain experienced the Didar with Mawlana Hazar Imam since his appointment as the 50th Imam on February 4, 2025, succeeding Mawlana Shah Karim, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, to the Hereditary Throne.
Didar, which means ‘glimpse’, ‘seeing’ or ‘vision’, refers to occasions when Ismailis have the opportunity to see and be in the presence of their Imam-of-the-Time. The Didar, as a physically uplifting event, is also a spiritually enriching experience, filled with emotions that resonate deeply, strengthening the bond and love for the Imam. The Imam’s presence helps the audience feel a sense of reverence and spiritual closeness, reinforcing their connection and bond with him at the Didar, which ensues in the years ahead.
The bay’a (oath of allegiance) to the Imam was submitted on behalf of the Jamat by the Mukhi of Darkhana. The President of the Aga Khan Ismaili Council, Yasmin Bhudarally, delivered a loyalty address.
In his Farman (guidance), Mawlana Hazar Imam expressed concern about the ill health of Portugal’s President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and said that he has extended best wishes for the President’s speedy recovery on behalf of the Jamat and his family.
Mawlana Hazar Imam shared important news about reforms to the merit-based undergraduate scholarship, including forgiving all outstanding loans and shifting to a grant-based system for current and future awardees. This change, he explained, is part of his desire to help remove the barriers to accessing quality higher education. The scholarship programme was established by Mawlana Shah Karim in the 1990s and has enabled thousands to access undergraduate degrees. Further details will be provided by the Education Boards in due course.
A gift was presented to Hazar Imam on behalf of the Jamat, consisting of two 19th-century works on the Islamic architecture of Al-Andalus. The region of Al-Andalus in the Iberian Peninsula was home to diverse communities between the 8th and 13th centuries, and a place where different skills and ideas were valued as sources of strength.
December 4, 2025: His Highness the Aga Khan meets with Ismaili youth, members of multifaith families and sees a fantastic art installation
…whilst our ritual practices and specific words and prayers may differ, I find that most faith communities share common values and principles and in many cases share stories and prophets, books, angels and God. These are humanistic values.” — His Highness the Aga Khan, multi-faith session, Lisbon, December 4, 2025.
He later addressed multifaith couples in the social hall. “I would like our community to treat non-Ismaili spouses the same as they treat Ismaili spouses, the same as they treat anyone as part of the family,” Hazar Imam said. “I think we have an opportunity in this country as a community — and that’s also thanks to our spouses — to really thrive. We have a responsibility to keep the country strong, to serve this country as well.”
“Our faith is rooted in a set of values and principles, which include a code of conduct and behavior that comprise kindness, generosity, tolerance, helping those in need, service, looking after each other. I think these values are universal. For Ismailis, living according to these ethical principles is an expression of our faith. So whilst our ritual practices and specific words and prayers may differ, I find that most faith communities share common values and principles and in many cases share stories and prophets, books, angels and God. These are humanistic values.”
Multifaith family member Raquel Fonseca thanked Hazar Imam on behalf of the guests: “This visit brought us closer to the Ismaili community,” she said.
“We are especially grateful for your spiritual leadership, which inspires our spouses, our children, and our families with values of service, integrity and compassion. Your Highness, thank you for your vision, your generosity, and for welcoming us with such heartfelt warmth.”
Hazar Imam then observed an art installation, titled Journey Home, co-created by the Portugal and Spain Jamats, made from sustainably sourced materials. The artwork depicts hundreds of drops of water, each with a hand-written message to the Imam, flowing toward a sculpted sea.
Inspired by Portugal’s deep cultural connection to the sea, the installation celebrated water as a symbol of each murid’s spiritual journey. Each drop follows a unique voyage, yet all merge into the vast ocean — a metaphor for Allah, the source of nourishment and light.
As Hazar Imam departed the Ismaili Centre, young volunteers and Jubilee Games medal winners gathered to bid him farewell. Later in the afternoon, Hazar Imam returned to the Centre to meet with Jamati leaders at an institutional reception.
A strongly held belief in the power of education to change lives and societies has been a defining thread across the history of the Ismaili Imamat — from the founding of Al-Azhar in the tenth century, to the establishment of Aligarh Muslim University, the Aga Khan University, and the University of Central Asia in the twentieth century, and the network of more than 200 Aga Khan Schools educating young people across diverse societies today — His Highness the Aga Khan
In a special video message, Mawlana Hazar Imam, congratulated the graduating class across the University’s campuses in Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, the United Kingdom, Afghanistan and Pakistan. He also spoke of the power and potential of education to respond to global challenges and uplift humanity.
“Never before have we known so much about nature and humanity,” he said. “Never before have the tools of scholarship and science been so powerful — from gene editing to artificial intelligence, and from climate science to data-driven innovation. This moment therefore places upon the Aga Khan University and its graduates both an extraordinary responsibility and an extraordinary opportunity: to create, to disseminate, and to apply knowledge in ways that improve the quality of human life.”
In her remarks, Princess Zahra reminisced on her memories of, and involvement with the University, dating back to its founding by Mawlana Shah Karim, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, in 1983.
“My AKU journey started when this campus was first conceptualised so I guess I was a little girl. I discussed it very often during family meals and throughout my childhood, and [my father] was so proud, so very proud when the charter was signed.”
January 26, 2026: His Highness the Aga Khan approves construction of Ismaili Centre in Paris
In a Talika Mubarak read in Jamatkhanas in France and its jurisdictions, Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, has informed the Jamat that he has approved the development of a new Ismaili Centre in Paris, as his father, Mawlana Shah Karim, wished. He has further authorized the design and construction of the Centre in Paris to proceed.
Hazar Imam reflected on the momentous occasion and outlined his aspiration for the Centre: “This building, which will be a symbol of the permanent presence of the Jamat in France, when completed, will be a significant addition to the architectural and cultural landscape of Paris…It is my hope that in addition to providing space for the Jamat’s congregational practices, this Centre will become a social and cultural centre for the Jamat of the jurisdiction, its extended families and its neighbours.”
Plans for the project date back to 2008 when Mawlana Shah Karim, during his Golden Jubilee, expressed a wish to establish an Ismaili Centre in Paris. A site was later identified, and in recent years work has accelerated to propose plans and designs for the building. The construction phase is expected to reach completion in mid-2028.
